Thursday, April 27 Class/The Impact of Mass Media
There is no meeting today. I'm posting on this blog an article related to the topic of the class (It is an excerpt, you can read the whole article on www.reason.com
This is a different point of view than the one from the producers of The Corporation. Another perspective of the same topic of convergence and media control.
There are problems created by the concentracion of mass media although certainly the United States is a much better place to work than many other countries, and the American people have far more options of entertainment and sources of news, than a lot of people in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
The questions you have to answer after reading the article are these:
Question 1: ACCORDING TO THE ARTICLE: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES THAT A FREE MARKET SETS FOR THE GROWTH OF THE MEDIA?
Question 2: DO YOU AGREE WITH HIS POINT OF VIEW? WHY OR WHY NOT?
(At the end of the post there is a comments line. Click on comments and it will open a small window where you can type your answers. Type it as ANSWER 1:......; ANSWER 2:....There is a space to write your name and also you can write it at the beginning of your answer if you prefer. If you have any doubt or question please send me an e-mail: ulisesgg@yahoo.com.
Your answers must be posted on this blog before our next meeting on Tuesday. It will be graded as participation and count also as attendance.
On the other hand, our guest Stephen Sheppard from CBS (www.cinemasauruscinema.com) gave me a few tapes of programs he edited at 60 Minutes. We'll watch some of this material next class and will discuss your answers on the blog.
Best regards,
Have a great weekend.

Question #1
The advantages of a free market in the media field are many. The growth will be affected by anyone who wants their voice to be heard. A democracy leaves the door open for such activity. Another advantage is that a good amount of information will bemade public, because what one person may not want to discuss will be discussed by someone else of another point of view.
Question#2
The author made comments about the field of media expanding and not being controlled by "onre group" as some people think. He says that large corporations control a smaller percent than they did in the past. I agree with this because it is just the natural result of changing technology such as the internet and podcasting.
Question #1
An advantage of a free market in the media is the opportunity as an American to start a media outlet if you wanted to basically in your backyard because you have the freedom to do so.
Question#2
I do not entirely agree with the article because as the author mentioned media is a complex machine and whether or not it is being monopolized by larger corporations is just one part of it.Is it happening? In reality yes, but when the author breaks it down he kind of blames it on the viewer for not seeking out or might I say paying attention to what is around them as far as media. And yes you can say it is a viewer's choice to increase their media literacy, but at the same time the American viewer is bombarded with advertisements and other different mirages of modern life that we just want to be able to trust the main sources that are the easiest to access. There is so much else going on in a viewer's personal life and the world around them who has time for media politics or who cares.
And yes media and politics go hand and hand, but politics plays apart in any business. I have found that people are always trying to press their way of life as the right way of life and if a person like Rupert Murdoch has an the outlet through ownership of various media outlets, why not use it? Anyone else would. It is hard to be objective in this world and I find it hard to believe there is a such thing especially with money involved.
So do I think I answered these questions? Maybe in a round about way, but then again I really do not care about the big wigs of white collar media. There are so many other things in the world to worry about and the information is for me too seek. Unfortunately, those issues are given to us in 1 hour specials and not on a daily basis, even on the the news that broadcasts 24 hours a day.
Answer 1: The advantages that a free market sets for society were to provide satellite television in the past 20 years. Also, advertising movies in video cassettes, DVDs available in movie rentals increased economic revenue for movie companies.
Answer 2: The author states that the media is not highly concentrated. I disagree with the author because without the media, most people wouldn't know what goes on in the news or in the enterntainment industry. Without the internet, we wouldn't be able way to know much information on local and cable news channels, education, or the entertainment.
